“Insumisas” acknowledged at the Transhumant and Cine Invisible festivals with two special mentions

Date: 2023 October 30

In October, the recognition of the Transhumant Festival in Catalonia and Cine Invisible Film Sozialak in Bilbao has been given to the documentary Insumisas Mujeres en lucha en el Sáhara Occidental, with two special mentions.

In Transhumant, Insumisas received a special mention from the short film jury for showing “the empowerment and leadership of Sahrawi women in the struggle to improve the complicated political and social situation in Western Sahara”. Cine Invisible awarded a special mention to Insumisas in the category of best work by a woman. These mentions are in addition to the one obtained in September at the 19th edition of the International Human Rights Festival in Sucre (Bolivia).

Recognition of the struggle and appeal for solidarity

Irantzu Mendia Azkue, director of Hegoa and a member of the Insumisas promotional team, apologised for the absence of Laura Dauden, co-director of the film with Miguel Ángel Herrera, from Forward Films, and collected the Cine Invisible award at the festival’s closing ceremony, held on 27 October in Bilbao.

In her speech, she primarily thanked the Sahrawi women involved in the struggle, recalling that they have been under a regime of military and police occupation for almost 50 years: “Let us remember the peoples who need our solidarity. We mention the Sahrawi people, but we do not forget the Palestinian people, also under occupation and under the falling bombs.”

Planned screenings

Up to the end of the year, independent screenings are already scheduled in La Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona), Caracas (Venezuela), Donostia-San Sebastian, Ondarroa, Pontevedra, Quito (Ecuador), Santander, Tarragona, Terrasa, Villafranca de los Barros (Badajoz) and Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The next screening will take place on 1 November, at 20:00, at the Teatro Principal in Pontevedra, in an activity organised by the Fundación Cuña-Casasbellas and CGT-Pontevedra. The screening of Insumisas will be followed by a colloquium with the participation of Laura Dauden and Miguel Ángel Herrera.
