The right to Truth as a peacebuilding tool. An international dialogue based on the experience from Colombia

Truth Commissions are temporary investigative mechanisms to clarify what happened in countries at war or in dictatorships and authoritarian regimes. There have been numerous Truth Commissions in the world and their legacies have been diverse.

The Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence and Non-Repetition of Colombia (CEV) has represented an innovative experience due to its methodologies, approaches, scope and even the type of difficulties it has faced. The set of narratives, actions, products and processes, tangible and intangible, also seeks to be innovative. Why? What is different? What contributions have truth commissions made to peacebuilding?

These questions inspire this summer course to bring to a wide audience reflections and knowledge about truth commissions from the most recent experience in Colombia.

Objectives

Strengthen knowledge about Truth Commissions as a tool for peacebuilding, through the learning, findings, challenges and legacy of the Commission for the Clarification of the Truth of Colombia and experiences in other countries.

This training activity, organised by the Hegoa Institute and the Department of Equality, Justice and Social Policies of the Basque Government, is part of the Summer Courses of the UIK Foundation (UPV/EHU) and also has the collaboration of Obra Social BBK. It will be held at the Miramar Palace, in Donostia / San Sebastián, on September 7 and 8.
